Fort Worth Community Update: August 2015

Here’s a round-up of highlights from August 2015:

Grocery

Last month, we celebrated Fiesta Mart and Carnival Food Store for becoming Blue Zones Project Approved. The two stores are the first in the Fiesta and Carnival chain to achieve Blue Zones Project Approved status. Both reached the designation by completing the Blue Zones Project Grocery Store Pledge and adopting or supporting a selection of best practices from a menu of 35 options. Visit each of these stores to make the healthy choice the easy choice.

Restaurants

Healthy choices just got tastier. Congratulations to our soon-to-be newest Blue Zones Project Approved restaurant. Join us for a celebration at Los Vaqueros in the Stockyards, August 22, for free yoga and a mimosa toast to celebrate this tasty accomplishment!

Fairmount Neighborhood Back to School Bash

Individuals

Blue Zones Project is partnering with neighborhoods and the City of Fort Worth to host special community events. Fairmount National Historic District and neighboring residents are invited to attend a Blue Zones Back-to-School-Bash on August 13. In addition, the team is actively meeting with churches and other faith-based organizations to reach Blue Zones Project Approval. If your church is interested in engaging their congregation in healthier habits, we'd love to talk to you! Please call 817-869-0900.

Schools

Blue Zones Project will host Purpose Workshops for more than 200 FWISD guidance counselors. Research shows that when you have a strong sense of purpose, you can add an additional 7-14 years to your life. This free and interactive workshop helps participants identify personal strengths that will help them translate purpose to the students they serve. We're proud to partner with FWISD schools to make healthier choices for students throughout the school year.  In addition, workshops will be offered for high school students 15 years and older.

In collaboration with the vision created by students at Dunbar High School, Blue Zones Project is working with the Stop Six Initiative which works to improve the historic neighborhood with compatible quality infill housing and appropriate mixed-use development in commercial areas. Jayla Johnson, a recent graduate of Dunbar High School, will be an intern for Blue Zones Project and will continue to provide input on those efforts. Blue Zones Project will participate in the Dunbar Pyramid Parade and Rally later this month to showcase opportunities for residents of Stop Six to participate in a walkability demonstration.

Worksites

Three worksites are now Blue Zones Project Approved, and more than 25 organizations are currently working toward this achievement. If you are interested in getting your worksite involved, please contact BlueZonesProjectFortWorth@Healthways.com.
