2022 Virtual Family Summit Promises Fun, Fitness and Prizes

Well-being is a multi-generational experience, and what better way to connect the family dots than through the interactive Blue Zones Project Virtual Family Summit. The fifth annual summit again invites area schools, students and their families—from grandchildren to grandparents and everyone in between—to log on and experience well-being from wherever they are.

The summit takes place Nov. 14 – Dec 2, 2022, with a variety of videos – from reading to healthier eating to movement – that offer simple ways for kids and adults to stay healthy and exercise their minds and bodies. Video topics this year include:

  • Shopping for Healthy, Budget-Friendly Meals
  • Kid-Friendly Fall-Inspired Snacks
  • 1-Mile at Home Walk
  • Youth Soccer and its Many Benefits
  • “Funky Cowboy” Country Line Dance
  • Balloon Volleyball
  • Hand-Eye Coordination Using a Paper Ball
  • Indoor/Outdoor Movement Ideas for Kids
  • Quick and Easy Full-Body Workout
  • Yoga Para Todos (Yoga for Everyone)
  • Reading is a Healthy Habit for Everyone
  • Kitchen Sink Science: How to Make Shower Gel
  • Teens and Sleep: The Cost of Sleep Deprivation

The virtual programs will be available for viewing on the Blue Zones Project Virtual Family Summit website beginning November 14. Schools are invited to show the videos to students during class or as part of a schoolwide event and to share summit information through school newsletters and social media. Families can also watch any or all the videos together at home.

And it pays to join in the fun. Participating Tarrant County schools and families are eligible to win great prizes. Six lucky schools will win $1,000 toward a school well-being project. Ten families will also be randomly selected to win fresh fruit and vegetables. To be eligible for prizes, participating families and schools must view one or more videos and submit post-summit forms, which can be found on the website, by December 2, 2022. Only schools and families residing in Tarrant County are eligible for prizes.

“When people think of improving well-being, they often imagine drastic diets and exercise. The summit will show that making healthy choices can actually be fun,” said Matt Dufrene, vice president of Blue Zones Project, Fort Worth. “The Blue Zones Project Virtual Family Summit is just that---a chance to get the whole family involved---because when students begin good habits early, they’re more likely to keep them up for years to come.”

While prizes are limited to Tarrant County participants, the Blue Zones Project Virtual Family Summit videos are accessible to anyone simply by logging on to the summit website between Nov. 14 and Dec. 2, 2022.

Wellness innovation grants available to area schools

The gauntlet is thrown and area students are invited to take up the challenge and develop creative ways to improve well-being on their school’s campus. The second annual Blue Zones Project Wellness Innovation Grant competition is accepting applications to fund student-led campus health and well-being initiatives inspired by Blue Zones Project principles. Tarrant County schools with the most creative and potentially successful ideas are eligible for up to $5,000 in funding to launch their projects.

PARTNERING TO SUPPORT SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVES

The normal “back-to-school” routine is anything but routine this year. School districts across Tarrant County differ greatly in terms of when they’ll start, in-class versus online options, and operating procedures. What hasn’t changed, however, is the need for school supplies. In fact, that need is greater than ever due to the economic impact COVID-19 has had on many families and schools having to shift more of their funding dollars to PPE items and safety initiatives.

Back to School, Back to Better Well-Being

As summer winds down, Fort Worth families are gearing up for the new school year. While you're getting your child ready to go back to school, we are working with dozens of area schools to make sure students are also going back to better well-being. Helping children succeed in the classroom means more than overseeing homework. We like to say "Move More, Learn More!" By ensuring kids add more physical activity into their daily mix, parents can help make kids’ developing minds work harder – and smarter.
