grocerycheckoutBlue Zones Project is a community-led well-being improvement initiative aimed at making healthier choices easier for people who live, work and play in Fort Worth. The two stores are the first in the Fiesta and Carnival chain to achieve Blue Zones Project Approved status. Both reached the designation by completing the Blue Zones Project Grocery Store Pledge and adopting or supporting a selection of best practices from a menu of 35 options.

Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price  and Council Member Sal Espino (District 2) will participate in both the morning and afternoon events. In the two Fort Worth stores, Fiesta and Carnival have implemented Blue Zones® checkout lanes where shoppers can find healthier impulse items such as fruit and water. Both stores have also designated Blue Zones parking spaces further away from the entrance to encourage walking and are providing healthy recipes and the Blue Zones Food List around the stores. Fiesta and Carnival were already implementing a number of other Blue Zones Project principles, such as offering salads as a healthier grab-and-go meal options and positioning produce displays at the front of the store.

“Fiesta and Carnival are committed to providing healthy options for our customers,” said Don Bersterman, director of operations for Fiesta and Carnival. “As our partnership with Blue Zones Project begins with these two locations, our ongoing efforts to serve and enhance the well-being of the Hispanic community continue.”

As a Blue Zones Project Demonstration Site, Fort Worth is working in six key areas, including worksites, schools, grocery stores, restaurants, individuals and community policy to implement environmental changes that improve well-being. Once city-specific goals are met, Fort Worth will be certified as a Blue Zones Community®.
