Get on Your Bikes and Ride!

May is National Bike Month, celebrated in communities from coast to coast. Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more folks to give biking a try.

And the benefits are numerous! Riding a bike can save time and money, help alleviate auto traffic, benefit the environment, and be a fun option for exploring the community. It’s also a great way to #MoveNaturally, one of the Power 9® principles for living longer and better. People who live the longest in the original Blue Zones® areas of the world aren’t super-endurance athletes. They live in environments that constantly encourage them to move without thinking about it.

To start your own natural movement, strap on your helmet and get rolling:

  • Try out one of Fort Worth’s numerous bike trails, such as the Trinity Trails, Cobb Park, or Overton Park.
  • Consider riding your bike to a nearby restaurant instead of driving or go for a ride in a local park after dinner.
  • Teach your kids how to safely ride a bike. Be a role model. Children who regularly see their parents enjoying sports and physical activity are more likely to do so themselves. Don't forget your helmet!
  • Create a biking “Moai.” Establish a regular time to bike with a group of friends and build social connections while you ride to improve your health. Visit Bike Friendly Fort Worth for a list of local cycling club group rides and special Bike Month events.
  • Start off the work day on two wheels by biking to work. May 13-19 is National Bike to Work Week so chart your route, take a change of clothes, and pedal to the office. Swing by Fort Worth Central Station (formerly the ITC on Jones Street) on May 17 from 7 to 9 a.m. for free bike swag.
  • Don’t have a bike? No problem. Fort Worth Bike Sharing has easy, affordable access to bicycles across the city, including 50 new electric-assist bikes that can help you go farther faster and climb hills in an eco-friendly way. Visit Fort Worth BCycle for more information or download the BCycle app.

Whether you bike to work or school, ride to save money or time, pump those pedals to preserve your health or the environment, or simply to explore your community, National Bike Month is a great opportunity to celebrate the unique power of the bicycle!
