The world’s longest-lived people don’t run marathons or join gyms. They live in environments that constantly nudge them to move without thinking about it. They move naturally! Walking is one of the easiest ways to add more natural movement to your day and increase longevity. But don’t forget to play it safe. Sadly, pedestrian-auto accidents are a reality in any city. It’s smart to be cautious when moving naturally outside.
When walking, always use a sidewalk if one is provided and accessible. Besides, it’s the law. If there are no sidewalks, stay on the shoulder on the left side of the roadway facing oncoming traffic. A few additional tips to keep in mind for a safe stroll:
- Use the crosswalk, and cross when the signal indicates;
- Remember what your mother told you: Look both ways before crossing the street!
- Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street to ensure they see you;
- If you choose to move naturally in the dark, wear reflectors or lights;
- If walking with children, make sure they are within sight or hearing distance of you at all times;
- Take your cell phone so you can call for help in an emergency;
- Always be aware of your surroundings;
- Arrange to walk with a buddy, for both added security and encouragement;
- Don’t spend your walk constantly looking down at your phone. After all, isn’t the point to get outside way from the phone?
- Remember to wear sunscreen, and reapply it often;
- Finally, don’t forget to hydrate, especially in this Texas heat.
By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your natural movement is safe and fun!
