BACK-TO-SCHOOL WELLNESS PREPARATION

In the quick pace of summer and the sudden surprise of back-to-school preparation, parents and students have a long list of tasks to complete that include physicals, shopping and schedules. Unfortunately, the last two school years have been far more hectic to plan for, considering the uncertainty of the pandemic. Instead of marching through as if everything is normal, families can talk openly with their children about how different things are and how the family intends to manage them.

Implementing a back-to-school routine creates a foundation for beginning the school year, with everyone understanding expectations. One of the ways families can prepare and support students’ return to the classroom is by having a “Back to School” meeting. While families are encouraged to do this even when things aren’t chaotic due to a pandemic, it’s especially worthwhile this year. Following these tips for hosting the meeting will ensure that the meeting is productive for both parents and students.

  1. Schedule a 1- to 2-hour time block for the family when there will be no interruptions.
  2. Use a kitchen timer to make sure each family member has reasonable time to share their thoughts and feelings. (3-5 minutes each)
  3. Include in your agenda time to discuss:
    • Schedules (school and extracurricular)
    • Grading expectations
    • Conduct expectations
    • Consequences for not meeting those expectations
  4. Make a generous effort to include the voice of the children as much as the parents. Parents are often amazed at the expectations their children have of themselves; they want more than their parents but often feel outsmarted when it comes to expressing their thoughts.
  5. Encourage your children to come talk to you about anything that happens during the school year. Include a discussion about the importance of mental health (even for children) and ways they can tell you when they are having a hard time.
  6. Close out the meeting with a commitment to make the school year fun by celebrating the wins, learning from setbacks, and spending meaningful time with one another.

Back-to-school season is an exciting time for families and communities worldwide. Make sure your family is ready for an awesome year of discovery and learning by setting the standards ahead of time. Assuming everyone is on the same page is a key ingredient for disaster. Instead, set aside the necessary time to communicate about the upcoming school year and, as parents, show your support of your children.
