Apex Capital was one of the first worksites in Fort Worth to become Blue Zones Project Approved™ and is setting the bar for wellness in the workplace.
Apex Capital has been voted one of the top companies to work for in Texas eight times and it's easy to see why. We sat down with their wellness team to learn more about their efforts to improve employee well-being.
Q: How easy / difficult was it to go through the Approval process?
A: We had a lot of buy-in from employees and our executive team because the mission of the Blue Zones Project directly aligns with our Apex Health and Wellness Program. It was a natural relationship from the start. We liked that it wasn’t just about wellness, but it included many other values Apex believes in. Everyone was really supportive and willing to help out with providing documentation, which was the most time-consuming part of the process. Going through the Approval process was a great way for us to review all that we’ve accomplished with our Apex Health and Wellness Program over the years and help us identify ways to improve our efforts.
Q: What are some of the best practices you have implemented?
A: Nutrition is a topic our employees want to learn more about, so they’ve really enjoyed the Blue Zones Project healthy cooking demonstrations. We’re also offering Power 9® and Know Your Purpose lunch and learns to our employees. The initiatives are great resources to help our employees achieve their health and wellness goals.
Q: How has employee engagement improved?
A: Since becoming a certified worksite, we’re noticing a more conscious effort from our employees to make healthier choices. More employees are taking the stairs, choosing sparkling water over soda, and taking advantage of the fresh fruit in our break room. Our employees want a healthy environment at Apex and the initiatives we’ve added make it easier for them to choose a healthy lifestyle.
Q: What wellness achievement are you most proud of?
A: Being one of the first seven Approved worksites was a huge honor! It really validated our corporate wellness program and showed us that we’re making healthy choices easier for our employees. Our Health and Wellness Program offers gym reimbursement and free access to an on-site fitness facility, on-site biometric screenings, ergonomic checklists and seminars, standing desk options, designated quiet spaces where employees can downshift, tobacco cessation, nutrition coaching and weight management programs, and so much more!
Q: What is your favorite Power 9 principle?
A: We connect most to the Know Your Purpose principle because we care about our employee’s wellbeing, as well as their health. We have many programs and practices that allow our employees to reflect on their goals and motivations and feel invested in their role at Apex. Our president David Baker started Apex with the vision “to create a company where people would leave work at the end of the day and go home and tell their kids how they made a difference in the life of someone that day.” So when our employees know their purpose, they feel like they’re making a difference when they come to work.
