10 Household Chores That Burn Calories

By Featured Contributor on Aug 20, 2020 9:13:00 AM

As part of my job being an OSU Extension Educator, I teach people about the balance between calories in and calories out. Or more importantly, what happens when you take more calories in than you use up. (Hint: your body stores them up. I’ll let you guess where and how.) I have always been a small statured person, which sometimes has people believe I have a good physical activity routine. However, I struggle with this habit and would much rather eat less (or more sensibly) than move more! I really wish it worked this way, but being active does more than keep your waistline in check.

But who doesn’t like to burn some calories while also accomplishing a needed task? So, here you go...a list of calorie-burning household chores!

5 Simple Ways to Add Movement to Your Day

By Featured Contributor on Jul 15, 2020 9:17:00 AM

Move more, naturally. Music to my ears, since I know I should be moderately active 30 minutes or more each day, but at my core…I am a couch potato! I have often said, the only time you will see me running is if I’m being chased or I’m chasing something. I strive for movement with a purpose. This is a challenging time we are experiencing. For many of us, we are relearning how to navigate our daily lives and I would dare say, if my own experience is any indication, that is resulting in surprising things. Get Up Offa That Thing

By Blue Zones Project - Pottawatomie County on Apr 22, 2020 10:38:09 AM

I don’t know about you, but when my work environment changes, my behaviors are greatly impacted. For example, I’m a great drinker of water when I’m consistently watching colleagues refilling water bottles, actively drinking water in meetings, or simply making a statement about how they have not been drinking enough. Remove me from that environment with these prompts encouraging and prompting the healthy choice and I quickly find myself riding the water drinking struggle bus.

The Well-Being Benefits of Daily Walks

By Blue Zones Project - Brevard on Apr 18, 2020 10:14:00 AM

As I leave my desk, I put on my tennis shoes and take a deep breath. Finally, fresh air and movement. I end each workday with a walk. For me walking touches on two of the Power 9 principles of the Blue Zones Project: Moving Naturally and Downshifting. As I walk it allows my body to realign after sitting at a computer all day and it clears my head before I go home. Sometimes I am quiet while I walk taking in nature. Other times I focus on what happened today and then let it go. I find that walking improves my mood and boosts my energy.

By Allen S. Weiss, MD, FACP, FACR, MBA on Mar 26, 2020 2:06:00 PM

Many of us are now working from home, and it’s not always easy. You may have seen this funny video from an otherwise serious   BBC interview  and relate now more than ever.

Much has rapidly changed in a few short weeks as millions of us now experience “WFM.”  This abbreviation for “Works for Me” or “Works from Home” are both appropriate in today’s new virtual work environment. For some of us, working remotely is not new.

Responding appropriately and positively to stress is healthy, satisfying, and could contribute to better outcomes. Certainly, the world is undergoing intense negative pressures which can be overwhelmingly damaging short-term or harnessed for good long-term.
