As I leave my desk, I put on my tennis shoes and take a deep breath. Finally, fresh air and movement. I end each workday with a walk. For me walking touches on two of the Power 9 principles of the Blue Zones Project: Moving Naturally and Downshifting. As I walk it allows my body to realign after sitting at a computer all day and it clears my head before I go home. Sometimes I am quiet while I walk taking in nature. Other times I focus on what happened today and then let it go. I find that walking improves my mood and boosts my energy.

On weekends I hike in the forest with friends or as Blue Zones Project would say, “Right Tribe” another Power 9 principle. We pick different trails to explore and talk about our work week and about our future plans. I find that walking with my tribe not only improves my mood and boosts my energy, but also makes me happy at my core.
They say walking everyday can have great health benefits as well. Studies show that walking helps with increased cardiovascular and pulmonary (heart and lung) fitness, reduced risk of heart disease and stroke, improved management of conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes. Walking also helps us have stronger bones and improved balance. All these benefits of walking help with our overall well-being.
Remember, physical activity does not have to be complicated, and you do not have to spend a lot of money on equipment. Walking is free and it is a simple way to keep your mind and your body healthy and balanced. Take your next step towards good health and well-being.

Editor's note: You can still walk together, apart, with your friends while practicing safe social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Simply call a friend or two up and chat on the phone while you both get your steps in.
