Move more, naturally. Music to my ears, since I know I should be moderately active 30 minutes or more each day, but at my core…I am a couch potato! I have often said, the only time you will see me running is if I’m being chased or I’m chasing something. I strive for movement with a purpose. So, if going to the gym or implementing a formal work out program isn’t for you, here are a few ways to add movement to your day and get moving more, naturally.
Yard work/Gardening. Gardening, mowing and yard work are a great way to get active outdoors. These activities make you bend, lift, walk, pull, etc. and it looks so good when you are done! Even if you don’t have a big yard (or any yard at all), use containers or put in a small flower bed.
Kids or Pets – take your pick. Both household members can inspire movement. Get out and play fetch, go for a walk, lead your cat around with a string. A little more active than some might want, but at my house we have “jump” time on the trampoline in the evenings, or swim time when it gets hot. For those who need a more low-key activity, don’t forget getting up and down to let your dog out!
Commercial Break or TV Shuffle. Let’s face it—watching TV from the couch tends to be a “go to” place for many. It can also be a place for movement if done right. Each time you start a new show, stretch, get up and walk in place, do leg lifts. You can also stand up and sit down or walk in place at each commercial break. If you need a little more motivation and purpose, drink a lot of water. Then you will need to go to the restroom which will include standing up and walking!
Walk or Stand with a purpose. As funny as it sounds ,this can add a lot of movement to your day. We all know that one person who seems to get places fast. They walk with a purpose. Their walk is quick, and they tend to zoom from one place to the next. Pace has a lot to do with adding healthy movement to your day. If you don’t want to walk on a treadmill, then at least pick up the pace while going into a store, to the kitchen, or around your backyard!
As your Grandma used to say – Don’t just stand around! But if you are standing, add a little movement. Walk in place while folding laundry or doing the dishes. Stand while reading or scrolling through Facebook. Add some music and a bounce to really up your game! Who knows...you might even break out into a full on dance to really get some energy going and calories burning!
Make mindful decisions. Choose the far away parking spot, take the stairs, etc. Although it doesn’t seem like a lot of movement, every step counts. Take walking breaks every hour. Sitting is becoming one of our biggest health concerns. We sit behind a computer, we sit in the car, and we sit when we get home. Making a mindful decision to move is one of the most important ways to have more movement in your everyday life.
