By Blue Zones Project - Hawaii on May 23, 2020 4:52:00 PM

Local moai in 'Ewa Beach, Hawaii is still going strong despite COVID-19 pandemic. Not to mention, they were the first moai to get started in this Blue Zones Project community. They show up each Sunday afternoon on Zoom to "meet."  Member Irene Chung mentions, "we are not just  walking friends , we are  FRIENDS ." Some of the moai members do not use technology, yet they still keep in touch through phone calls to one another. Moai leaders, Teresa Sakurada and Flo Baruz call each member every week to check in with them, especially those who do not use technology.

Moais Help Shawnee, Oklahoma Resident Fight Loneliness

By Blue Zones Project - Pottawatomie County on May 20, 2020 9:19:00 AM

I moved to Oklahoma from West Texas to manage a retail property without knowing a soul. I met so many wonderful people through my job and built great relationships, but it took me over a year to make friends. I would get so excited when some of my favorite people would walk through the doors where I worked, but I didn’t feel we were close enough to call for a weekend hang-out, that first year was rough!

Heroes Work Here

By Blue Zones Project - Umpqua on May 15, 2020 4:46:00 PM

Stay home, save lives.

Community members have done well in heeding these instructions to “flatten the curve” through social distancing, donning masks and gloves on limited excursions from the safety of their homes, and trying to make the most of this new, however temporary, normal. But what about those on whom we all relay for the essentials? Curbside garbage continues to be picked up. Groceries remained stocked. Mail arrives. Medical providers are still there for you. While it has it’s challenges, having the ability to self-quarantine may be a luxury that some cannot afford.

Find Your Accountability Buddies for Better Well-Being

By Blue Zones Project - Hawaii on Apr 22, 2020 10:12:22 AM

Last year, I took a step back to evaluate my weekly routine as I was finding myself spending an increasingly large number of nights going out to dinner, stopping by a happy hour or grabbing lunch out while I was on the go. I also found that I was spending a lot of money and eating some pretty unhealthy food options. I was hearing a lot of the same from my group of girlfriends. We knew we had an opportunity to change the activities we were doing so we could start living a healthier lifestyle. A group of six of us decided then to commit to a year of health and well-being improvements.

Behind Every Good Recipe is an Even Better Story

By Featured Contributor on Apr 20, 2020 10:11:00 AM

Behind every good recipe is an even better story—the story makes it tasty too! (If you don’t immediately get the reference to Vitameatavegamin & Lucille Ball – then I feel sorry for you).

Picture this: A big family - Mom, Dad, five children, and Nanny (aka Grandma Daisy) are all watching television together (yes, this was a long time ago).

Practicing the Power 9 for New Remote Colleagues

By Allen S. Weiss, MD, FACP, FACR, MBA on Mar 26, 2020 2:06:00 PM

Many of us are now working from home, and it’s not always easy. You may have seen this funny video from an otherwise serious   BBC interview  and relate now more than ever.

Much has rapidly changed in a few short weeks as millions of us now experience “WFM.”  This abbreviation for “Works for Me” or “Works from Home” are both appropriate in today’s new virtual work environment. For some of us, working remotely is not new.

Adopting the Power 9 While Social Distancing

By Allen S. Weiss, MD, FACP, FACR, MBA on Mar 19, 2020 1:56:00 PM

Responding appropriately and positively to stress is healthy, satisfying, and could contribute to better outcomes. Certainly, the world is undergoing intense negative pressures which can be overwhelmingly damaging short-term or harnessed for good long-term.
