I don’t know about you, but when my work environment changes, my behaviors are greatly impacted. For example, I’m a great drinker of water when I’m consistently watching colleagues refilling water bottles, actively drinking water in meetings, or simply making a statement about how they have not been drinking enough. Remove me from that environment with these prompts encouraging and prompting the healthy choice and I quickly find myself riding the water drinking struggle bus.
Unfortunately, my behavior change due to the shift in my work environment doesn’t stop with just drinking less water. It ultimately means I’m moving a lot less each day. I’m no longer constantly refilling my water bottle, taking LOTS of bathroom breaks, walking over to colleagues’ desks, walking across the street for an afternoon coffee, or relocating in the office for a meeting. I’m now sitting at my desk, fully focused on a task or conference call for several hours in a row without interruption. It sounds like a great thing for productivity, but not so much for the body.
What to do when things change and we need our pendulum to swing back toward greater well-being? Let’s get intentional! (If you aren’t singing “Let’s get intentional” to the melody of a certain Olivia Newton song, you should be.) One thing you can do to intentionally add more movement back into your work day is to “Get Up Offa That Thing” with this awesome Blue Zones Project resource! Not sure how to make this happen?
Here are a few more tips on how to intentionally set up your environment to encourage stretching breaks throughout your work day:
-
Add 15-minute movement or stretch breaks to your calendar
-
Add a visual cue to your computer desktop (hint: “Get Up Offa That Thing” IS my computer desktop image!)
-
Find some fun visual reminders to hang in your workspace
-
Ask a friend to join you on this journey and hold each other accountable
