Get Up Offa That Thing

By Blue Zones Project - Pottawatomie County on Apr 22, 2020 10:38:09 AM

I don’t know about you, but when my work environment changes, my behaviors are greatly impacted. For example, I’m a great drinker of water when I’m consistently watching colleagues refilling water bottles, actively drinking water in meetings, or simply making a statement about how they have not been drinking enough. Remove me from that environment with these prompts encouraging and prompting the healthy choice and I quickly find myself riding the water drinking struggle bus.

Find Your Accountability Buddies for Better Well-Being

By Blue Zones Project - Hawaii on Apr 22, 2020 10:12:22 AM

Last year, I took a step back to evaluate my weekly routine as I was finding myself spending an increasingly large number of nights going out to dinner, stopping by a happy hour or grabbing lunch out while I was on the go. I also found that I was spending a lot of money and eating some pretty unhealthy food options. I was hearing a lot of the same from my group of girlfriends. We knew we had an opportunity to change the activities we were doing so we could start living a healthier lifestyle. A group of six of us decided then to commit to a year of health and well-being improvements.

Tips from a Traveling Work from Homer

By Blue Zones Project - The Dalles on Apr 22, 2020 10:08:39 AM

Before joining Blue Zones Project in The Dalles, Oregon, I spent 25 years working with international advertising and brand agencies in Europe and in the US. As a dual Swedish-US citizen, with family on both continents, I’ve moved back and forth a few times, typically spending at least a month each year in “the other” country. During those times, I’ve always worked remotely managing large scale projects and teams. Working across multiple time zones, I’ve had to keep very fluid work hours, including evenings, mornings and weekends. For better or worse, I’ve never been very good at separating my private from my professional life.

4 Well-Being Benefits of Pet Ownership

By Blue Zones Project - Hawaii on Apr 22, 2020 10:00:00 AM

When I started working remotely about five years ago, I quickly recognized how different it was than going into the office and having a regular group of people to chat with throughout the day. Having owned pets my entire life, I knew that adopting an animal would help ease the gap of in-person co-worker interaction. Owen (the cat) has now been a part of my family for three years and is voted ‘employee of the month’ on most occasions.

Tips for Mindful Eating

By Featured Contributor on Apr 21, 2020 10:09:00 AM

“Hey! Who ate all my chips!?”

I think we’ve all fallen victim to mindless munching before, but becoming a mindful eater isn’t just for the meditators and yogis. Mindful eating should be a goal for all of us.

While you may not normally be one that binge watches shows, even those least likely to veg out for the day to soak in documentary drama are camping out in pajamas, and breaking out the snacks to stream the popular Netflix Docuseries, Tiger King.

Behind Every Good Recipe is an Even Better Story

By Featured Contributor on Apr 20, 2020 10:11:00 AM

Behind every good recipe is an even better story—the story makes it tasty too! (If you don’t immediately get the reference to Vitameatavegamin & Lucille Ball – then I feel sorry for you).

Picture this: A big family - Mom, Dad, five children, and Nanny (aka Grandma Daisy) are all watching television together (yes, this was a long time ago).

The Well-Being Benefits of Daily Walks

By Blue Zones Project - Brevard on Apr 18, 2020 10:14:00 AM

As I leave my desk, I put on my tennis shoes and take a deep breath. Finally, fresh air and movement. I end each workday with a walk. For me walking touches on two of the Power 9 principles of the Blue Zones Project: Moving Naturally and Downshifting. As I walk it allows my body to realign after sitting at a computer all day and it clears my head before I go home. Sometimes I am quiet while I walk taking in nature. Other times I focus on what happened today and then let it go. I find that walking improves my mood and boosts my energy.
