HECO's Walking Moai, Energizers, have been walking together for over 120 weeks!
Hawaiian Electric Company partnered with Blue Zones Project – Hawaii in 2015 to bring healthier choices to their employees across the state. One of the healthy initiatives launched at their Blue Zones Project wellness kick-off event was Walking Moais.
The term ‘moai’ (pronounced mow-eye) comes from Okinawa, Japan. It means meeting for a common purpose and originated as a way for villagers to support each other. Social networks have long-term, proven impact on well-being and are one of the foundational pillars of worksite well-being programs. Blue Zones Project encourages employees across departments to join together and walk weekly to break down silos and create a more supportive work place environment.
After hearing the Blue Zones Project story during a well-being committee meeting, Phil Gerwien, Principal Engineer at Hawaiian Electric launched a Walking Moai called the Energizers. Phil and his group started walking together in November 2016 and has since been meeting up weekly to exercise and socialize. Starting with only two members, Energizers has since grown to eight members walking at least one mile each Wednesday morning. The Energizers enjoy walking to maintain health and mobility and see this opportunity as a great way to connect with their co-workers on a more personal level.
Energizers has been walking together for over 120 weeks and still going strong!
