Let's Walk Wahiawa Addresses the Importance of Having Safe Routes for Students

Throughout October of last year, the Blue Zones Project - Wahiawa School Committee promoted a public awareness project called “Let’s Walk Wahiawa.” This event celebrated National Walk to School Day and addressed the importance of having safe routes for students to get to and from school.

Participating schools shared their concerns about the safety of neighboring streets. The schools hosted a Walk-in-School activity on campus grounds, and a “Walking School Bus,” which is a group of students and chaperones that walk along a safe route to school.

A transportation survey also was conducted to better understand how Wahiawa students get to and from school. Survey results showed concern about the usability and safety of sidewalks, along with heavy traffic on California Avenue.

The "Let's Walk Wahiawa" project was an absolute success! Throughout October 2018, 10 Wahiawa schools, 2,898 students and 291 adults participated to promote healthy habits and daily exercise to keep Wahiawa keiki healthy and connected to their neighborhoods. This project also allowed us to identify current transportation methods students use to get to and from school as well as opportunities for Walking School Bus programs and routes.
