Each of us is here to connect with our unique gifts; this is what activates our desire to be alive. Dr. Gladys refers to this secret as the “juice” or “purpose.”
Blue Zones Project Yuba Sutter has been hosting a Book Club Moai over the last couple of months. Those participating just finished reading “The Well-Lived Life: A 103-Year-Old Doctor’s Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age,” by Gladys McGarey, MD.
The secrets that Dr. Gladys shares are akin to some of the Blue Zones Power 9 healthy habits. In fact, she even references Blue Zones at one point in the book. She shares her six secrets through personal stories of her own life’s journey as well as through her patients’ experiences.
Dr. Gladys has been a pioneer in her approach to medicine and healing. She believes, with the right perspective and attitude, we have the power within ourselves to heal much of what afflicts us.
Her secrets to a well-lived, healthy and happy life are focused on living with joy, vitality and a sense of purpose.
Each of her secrets shows us our healing process is as much spiritual as it is physical. She shows us that every moment is precious, every relationship is valuable, and every experience is a teacher.
I was touched by her inspiring stories and wise perspectives. Inspired so, that I felt compelled to share her secrets with you. One at a time. Maybe you will be inspired too.
Secret #1
Each of us is here to connect with our unique gifts; this is what activates our desire to be alive. Dr. Gladys refers to this secret as the “juice” or “purpose.”
In the original Blue Zones, where people are living happier and healthier, having a deep sense of purpose is at the center of their well-lived lives. Understanding our “why” and knowing what we are here to contribute to the world and to those around us, gives us meaning and can bring a deep sense of joy.
Finding our “why” matters. It makes us feel alive and connected.
I look forward to revealing more of Dr. Gladys’ secrets in future posts. I have appreciated her joyful perspective on life and her belief that each circumstance we face is an opportunity to learn. Great book!
