“People in Blue Zones have a clear sense of purpose. Connecting to a purpose in life, something bigger than ourselves is a part of living long, fulfilling lives.” -Dan Buettner, Blue Zones
Our purpose is connected to our creative spirit. Our creative spirits are so powerful. So much energy and goodness flow from our creative selves. When we are connected to our creative selves it can:
-Keep us motivated
-Make us feel that we are connected to something bigger than ourselves
-Help us discover a deeper sense of self
-Help us feel a deeper sense of belonging
What connects you to your creative spirit? Is there a specific activity, place or time that is more welcoming of the creative process or allows your thoughts and ideas to flow more freely without distractions? I have a few tricks of my own but one of my most favorite is when I am running.
I didn’t always view my morning run in this way. It used to be an activity to simply get my cardio in. Now I use my morning run to connect with myself on an emotional and spiritual level. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good cardio workout but, in my opinion, the emotional and spiritual health benefits far exceed the cardiovascular benefits (though I am not a physician 😊)! This new mindset has been a game changer.
I use this time to pray, process and set an intention for my day ahead. Clarity makes its way in where there may have been confusion or uncertainty. Areas of indecision in my life fade as I come into knowing the right direction to go. Creative connections are made. The simple act of throwing my running shoes on and hitting the pavement has proved to be one of the most powerful tools to help me to connect to myself, my creative spirit and new perspectives. This time helps me to make connections that have not been made before.
I believe that creativity is about connecting things. When my runs spark creativity, I am making connections with old thoughts or ideas in new ways. I often will stop mid run and dictate some of those thoughts or ideas. I have learned to do that because those thoughts can be fleeting and will disappear as quickly as they appeared. I often get inspired to write from a simple thought or idea that surfaced on my run. I even get excited to run in anticipation of what thought or idea will visit me this time.
There is a something so magical in this time as I witness the power that exists between creativity and connection and my deeper sense of purpose. I believe we all have that creative spirit within us – it wants to thrive! But it can be difficult to tap into it. Finding that space where your thoughts and ideas can flow freely, and you can connect with yourself, and your purpose more deeply is critical to creating a healthier and happier life.
My run time is precious to me. It reconnects me to myself, my creative spirit and my deeper sense of purpose in this world. It is often too easy to become disconnected or untethered from ourselves and get lost amid the intensity of our world today and the deafening noise of our busy lives. Finding that quiet time with ourselves is imperative. Simply letting go and getting in the flow can bring us back to ourselves where we can connect with our creative spirit. You never know what marvelous things you will find! In the words of Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, “We are all walking repositories of buried treasure.”
