ARE COLORFUL CHICKEN EGGS HEALTHIER THAN WHITE EGGS?

Eggs are among the most nutritious foods on the planet and loaded with essential vitamins, minerals, proteins, antioxidants and are a relatively low-calorie food with about 70 calories in one large egg.  The color of an egg shell has influence on people’s buying choices. Some believe that brown, green, blue,  pink or speckled eggs are healthier than white chicken eggs.  If you’ve ever wondered why chicken eggs come in a variety of colors, the reason has nothing to do with nutrition and everything to do with genetics.

Egg color is determined by the breed of the chicken and has nothing to do with health of the bird or environmental factors. That means the breed of the hen is what indicates the color of the egg. In fact, all eggs start out white and colored eggs are the result of pigments deposited on them as the eggs travel through the hen’s oviduct. For example, leghorn chickens lay white eggs, Rhode Island Red’s lay brown eggs, and Ameraucana lay blue eggs. Other than their appearance, there are no significant differences between eggs from different breeds of chickens.

So, the truth is, there is no nutritional difference between colorful chicken eggs and white chicken eggs. What does determine egg nutrition differences is mostly in the age of the hen and their diet.
