To celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth we interviewed local well-being champions and leaders within our community.
Meet David Henry!
David Henry is a Pastor at Calvary Baptist Church. "Our Booth Camp Bible training program where we train children to become spiritual champions and no-nonsense adults is one of my major investments in this community. Changing our culture starts with training our children."
David utilizes his role as a pastor to provide mentorship to men and women who are struggling to overcome a variety of circumstances such as homelessness, incarceration, legal issues, addiction, and just a general struggle to find meaning and hope.
"I serve in many organizations throughout our community as a volunteer worker, board member, and training volunteers and leaders. One of the goals I’ve achieved recently is becoming a Purpose Workshop facilitator for Blue Zones Project. Serving others and being a champion for great causes bring value and meaning to life."
We asked David what his favorite Power 9 Principle is and other questions below.
David said, Purpose. "For a long time, the concept has meant a great deal to me. I have lived with the consciousness of the need for a roadmap for life. To find out that researchers have identified this as a high value in the quality and longevity of life is inspiring to me. I am particularly impressed with the emphasis and resources Blue Zones provides to help people discover and pursue a life of purpose."
Why do you believe you were nominated?
"I am a strong advocate and supporter for what Blue Zones is doing to make our community and lives healthier and one of the best places for us to live."
What does #BlackHistoryMonth mean to you?
"It took me a long time, almost two decades, to understand the main problems with being Black in America and why it is so contentious. Black History Month is a reminder to keep progressing towards a society where all people are treated as equals without regard to race. Racial inequity seems to be the gateway to all other forms of discrimination and a poorer society and civilization. An emphasis on Black highlight the value and contribution of Blacks to make our country and our world a better place."
We are grateful to David for pouring his heart into helping people to find their purpose in alignment with their faith to improve the overall well-being of people in Shawnee. Thank you, David, for being a leader within your congregation and community!
