Food Policy Summit
Blog by: Tanja Roos
On February 25th, Blue Zones Project Monterey County convened a virtual Food Policy Summit which included 40 community leaders and key stakeholders from across our region. Under the skillful guidance of national food policy experts, Maggi Adamek and Miles Gordon, participants walked through the findings of a 26-page Food Policy ‘Discovery’ report, which included input from 30 key actors in the food ecosystem and data points from various Community Health Needs Assessments conducted by our local health systems. The report findings provided excellent context for participants to work in small groups to determine policy recommendations specific to the Peninsula Cities (Marina, Seaside and Monterey) and the greater Monterey County expansion efforts. Clear policy priorities emerged from the group, which will be vetted and included in a final report that will be completed at the end of March. Participants left the Summit feeling energized about the collaborative opportunities to co-create a more just, resilient and equitable food system in Monterey County.
