Schools Across the State Participate in Walk to School Day 2019!

Ala Wai Elementary School participated in Walk to School Day!

October was International Walk to School Month and multiple schools and communities across Oahu joined the annual celebration, which highlighted the importance of empowering communities to make walking and bicycling to school a safe, appealing and preferred choice for families.

The Wahiawa community hosted the 2nd Annual Let’s Walk Wahiawa campaign. Led by the Blue Zones Project - Wahiawa School Committee, Let’s Walk Wahiawa is a month-long campaign that brings awareness to the need for safe routes to school. The campaign also helps increase physical activity to achieve Healthier School Days in the Wahiawa community.

“It was a fun event and we could make new friends by talking to the lower grades while walking.  Now my new friend waves to me in school. I also like that they tracked our steps too because you don’t think about that when you go walking. I like that my school is doing more healthy and fun activities with Blue Zones [Project]!” explained a student from Iliahi Elementary School.

This year, nine schools participated in Let’s Walk Wahiawa, including public, private, and charter schools in the Central Oahu community. So far, seven schools have completed the campaign, which included more than 2,600 students and 350 adults collectively walking more than 5,125,000 steps during October.

The schools hosted a Walk-in-School activity on campus grounds, and a “Walking School Bus,” which is a group of students and chaperones that walk along a safe route to school.

The Wahiawa community also participated in Unity Day on October 23rd. Iliahi Elementary School hosted Walk with a Friend as part of their month-long event. Combining two of the Blue Zones Project principles “move naturally” and “right tribe,” the students came together in a walking event that allowed them to meet a new friend.

Other Blue Zones Project communities on Oahu participated in Walk to School events as well, including: Ala Wai Elementary, Mokapu Elementary, Pohakea Elementary, James Campbell High, Dreamhouse ‘Ewa and more, totaling over 5,215,000 steps.

Mahalo to all the student participants, teachers, parents, and volunteers who made this a successful Walk to School Month. Way to move naturally!
