Guy Hauanio, a security guard at Keaau High School, was first inspired by the Blue Zones® story at work, where he first learned about Blue Zones Project®. After hearing the presentation, he decided to incorporate a plant-based diet into his lifestyle. Though it was difficult giving up kalua pig, lau lau, and other local favorites, Guy made small changes to begin eating smarter and healthier. Now, he chooses whole foods and vegetables and cooks with water instead of oil.

“I tried the plant based diet for 28 days, and it was hard, but once I got through it, I stuck with it and it got easier. Now I am used to it.”

Incorporating a Blue Zones diet doesn't mean eating less. In fact, it means eating more plant-based and nutritious foods. Since discovering Blue Zones Project, Guy has lost more than 100 pounds and no longer needs to take any diabetes medication. He also began participating in a Blue Zones Project Walking Moai at work and hopes to become even healthier.

Now a strong champion of Blue Zones Project at Keaau High School, Guy speaks to the entire school about adopting a Blue Zones lifestyle.

“I wish I had changed my diet years ago. I have more energy now, I feel super!”

Guy is rightfully proud of his accomplishment and is determined to stick to the changes he made for the rest of his life.
