Our Blue Zones Project – hawai‘i team has been supporting the first responders of the Kilauea Volcano eruption

Since a state of emergency was declared in Hawai‘i in early May, there has been a statewide effort to help areas affected by volcanic activity. First responders, such as firefighters, military personnel and other volunteers, have put all hands on deck to respond to emergencies and protect their communities. Due to limited resources, many of these first responders are working around the clock and subsequently spending long periods of time away from their homes and families. Our Hawai‘i team realizes that these selfless efforts are keeping their communities as safe as possible and, out of appreciation, they’ve responded by sharing care with their local heroes.

Some first responders are operating checkpoint stations, which are staffed 24/7 to keep the public from being exposed to lava, sulfur dioxide and acid rain that are within close proximity to the fissures. While these individuals endure the sun and hot elements each day, our Hawai‘i team delivers goodies like smoothies, beverages, and paletas – healthy popsicles made with real fruit – to help them beat the heat. We've also shared these treats with other volunteer groups, public service groups and families displaced by the volcanic activity. Everyone has been very appreciative of the these weekly delivery of treats, but they’re most appreciative of the paletas, which have quickly become a crowd favorite.

In addition to caring for the first responders, our team has also committed our support to Hope Services, an organization that is building micro units (or tiny houses) for families displaced by lava. We are also encouraging other Blue Zones Project sites to support Hawai‘i residents in need through Hope Services.
