Power 9 Inspired Volunteer Ideas Your Keiki Can Do From a Distance
We are excited to launch Virtual Volunteer Week Hawai‘i to activate youth to #RespondWithAloha. While the kids are at home during this difficult time, let’s make it an opportunity to find creative ways to volunteer in your neighborhood, within your family and virtually! Below are some virtual volunteer ideas to do with your right tribe! Be sure to gather on FaceTime, Zoom or your favorite video app while doing these things — you might just make someone’s day!
Don’t forget to register your volunteer ideas so you and your pals receive your Volunteer Week tees! (t-shirts are available while supplies last).
Move Naturally
- Beachbody has some fun workouts for keiki to keep them active at home. Try them out at home and then invite your neighborhood to do it at the same time or together from everyone’s driveways (keeping social distance).
- Teach the younger generation how to ride a bike, go on family outings in your neighborhood, walk the beach, all while practicing social distancing.
- Clean up the play area before meals, naptime, etc. with a fun song i.e. “Clean Up the Room”
Purpose
- You don’t have to be out saving the world right now; simple things go a long way. Maybe go for a walk to pick-up litter in your neighborhood or use your talents in other ways to help those in need during this time.
Downshift
- Get the family together to do some yoga at home! Cosmic Kids have some fun options.
- Here’s a guided meditation for kids to instill some calm after a long day of distance learning.
80% Rule
- Cook a healthy meal for your family and remind them during dinner, “hara hachi bu.” We have a few easy, healthy recipes (including kid-friendly ones) to choose from here.
Plant Slant
- Donate healthy food to those in need through the Hawaii Food Bank.
- Start a home garden to produce fresh veggies for your family.
- Try new recipes incorporating vegetables!
Friends @ 5
- Plan a Zoom play date with your school friends to reconnect and check in on them and their families.
Right Tribe
- FaceTime/Video chat friends while watering the garden
- Host a living room dance party with your friends on Zoom. Follow Kids Dance Party Crew for some jams!
- Cook healthy meals and share recipes together on video chat.
Family First
- Eating one, or three, healthy meals a day together without technology or distractions.
- Discuss your day — share one high (peak) and one low (pit) of your day.
- Take this free time to go through family albums and discuss heritage, video call family members, etc.
- Start a phone tree in your family to check-in on the kupuna.
Belong
- Attend a virtual faith-based service, motivational speech or join your exercise buddies for a FaceTime workout.
