Practice the Power 9, from a Distance

Consciously practicing healthy habits is more important today than ever before. As we near a whole year of physical distancing, we must look for creative ways to continue working on our well-being. Luckily, the Blue Zones Power 9® practices are easily adaptable during these unusual times.

Power 9: Socially Distanced Edition

Move Naturally – Get out in the yard, walk your dog, go for a run. Enjoy the sunshine and smell the fresh Hawai‘i air while practicing safe social distancing. Working on your fitness? Try an online yoga or workout class! Want to get some steps in during the work day? Plug your headphones in and take a walking meeting!

Purpose – Now is a great time to learn a new skill, virtually volunteer in your community, or pursue your passions! If this pandemic has taught us anything, it's to live life with more "oh wells," than "what ifs." Make a plan for how you can live a better life doing the things you are meant to.

Downshift – Stay informed, but don’t stay glued to the TV. Take care of yourself and relax. Read a book. Meditate. Keep a journal. Breathe!

80% Rule – "Hara hachi bu." Eat mindfully, enjoy your food, and stop eating when 80% full. Use smaller plates, turn off the TV, really be in the moment and savor the food that nourishes your body. Avoid the kanak attack.

Plant Slant – Eat more fruits, veggies, and beans. Your body needs nutrition, perhaps now more than ever. Whether you get your produce from a local grocery store or your own backyard garden, consider trying a new recipe with a fruit or vegetable you don't normally reach for. Who knows, you may even come to love it!

Wine @ Five – Pour yourself a glass of wine, whip out your smartphone, and catch up with family or friends over a virtual pau hana. Not a drinker? No problem! Grab yourself a drink or snack of choice and enjoy the company (even if miles apart).

Belong – Many faith-based organizations offer live-streaming or podcast services. Connect with congregants, share your concerns, and help one another.

Family First – Take care of yourself first, then look after your family. You will all feel better knowing that you’re doing the right thing by taking care of one another as best as you can.

Right TribeRemain connected with friends who are optimistic and help you to stay healthy and positive. Share good news and encourage one another to be resilient!
