May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Saying this past year was tough is an understatement. No matter the challenges you've gone through, the pandemic has impacted our mental health in different ways. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which brings awareness to the important role mental health plays in our overall health and well-being. We've put together a list of ways you can prioritize your mental health.
Take yourself on a date
The more you practice entertaining, nurturing, and dating yourself, the more you learn about yourself and what you want in your relationships. Reconnect with yourself by taking yourself on a date and enjoying new or loved activities. Here are some of our favorite ideas:
- Bring a blanket, a snack, and a good book to enjoy at your neighborhood park.
- Support a local art museum and take your time walking through the exhibits.
- Take a walk on the beach during sunset.
- Visit a Blue Zones Project Approved™ restaurant and try something new off the menu.
Connect with yourself through meditation
While meditation isn't a cure-all, it can certainly provide some much-needed space in your life. With work, home, and the ongoing uncertainties in our world, our minds can sometimes feel like its going 100 mph. Take a seat, set a time limit, notice your body, feel your breath. Maybe opt for a guided meditation with Headspace or find a YouTube video to listen to as you allow yourself the time and space to breathe.
Take a technology detox
Turn your phone, TV, and computers off for the day and immerse yourself in the present. Go for a walk, listen to the birds chirping, and take in all that your natural environment has to offer. By eliminating technological devices, you'll be able to be fully present and enjoy every moment.
Seek professional help
Mental health is one of the most stigmatized health issues that humans face... the stigma ends here. Use them if you need them, share them with someone who might need them. There is no shame in seeking help.
