Iroquois Point Elementary School is the First to Achieve Blue Zones Project Dual Approval in the 2021 Kapolei-‘Ewa School Wellness Challenge
Iroquois Point Elementary School (IPES) strives to provide an environment that promotes whole health in its students and staff. Their healthy snack policy and vending machine options help students make smart nutritional choices, and the school has been laying the groundwork for a campus garden to better connect keiki with the ‘āina.
IPES also promotes student leadership around well-being. Their student council reads morning wellness announcements, leads fundraisers, and coordinates student events such as campus clean-ups and school cultural days, Aloha Ambassadors help introduce transitioning students to their campus, and Junior Police Officers ensure crosswalk safety around campus for students walking to school.
Mindfulness is important at IPES. The school incorporates several programs such as Second Step, Choose Love, and the Roots of Empathy. While teachers incorporate a variety of mindfulness tools into their classroom, the school also has an Aloha Center and a Mindful Center to support social-emotional development.
IPES supported their staff during school closures with regular communications and updates. School counselors created a Choice Board with online and offline activities that included everything from yoga to a steps challenge to a book club to a virtual pau hana, and provided resources to promote well-being and resiliency. Most recently, they organized a staff Wellness Day with breakout sessions on hula, storytelling, cooking classes, lei-making, and much more! Congratulations Iroquois Point Elementary School on your dual-approval achievement.
