‘Ilima at Leihano Reintroduces Walking Moais
‘Ilima at Leihano, a Blue Zones Project Approved™ worksite, is the only senior living community of its kind, located within the 40-acre Leihano mixed-use community in the heart of the new "Second City" of O‘ahu.
Since becoming an approved worksite, ‘Ilima has since continuously implemented healthy choices in both their training and programming. While employees committed to a healthier lifestyle by taking the Blue Zones Project Pledge, the staff also shares the Power 9® principles with their residents. One of their favorite activities to do as a group is participating in a walking moai and encouraging moving naturally as much as possible.
The staff reintroduced walking moais to strengthen their community of residents while being isolated due to the pandemic. Currently, they walk every Friday at 8:30AM in groups of five (four residents and one staff member). Two groups will take a short walk in the parking lot, while the other two groups will take a longer walk off the premises. To stay safe, they continue to follow CDC guidelines and social distance during their walks. If the weather outside isn't suitable for walking, they walk the floors within the building... a little rain can't stop these kūpuna!
“A lot of people go to the front desk and say they are happy that Blue Zones Project is back. They love to walk and exercise! They encourage walking together, but they do miss doing cooking demos. It’s been great to breathe fresh air and they are not afraid to go out.” – Ethel, Activities Coordinator at ‘Ilima at Leihano
