Big Island Schools Moving Naturally with the 2018 #SchoolMoaiChallenge
Big Island Schools were invited to participate in a Walking Moai Challenge at the beginning of the school year. Fifteen schools from all over the island took part, with over 300 participants forming teams with names like Mynah Birds, Road Warriors and Glitter Girls.
Teams walked for at least 30 minutes per week over a ten-week period that ended the week before Thanksgiving. There were several competitions, including number of steps taken, amount of time spent together, and a social media challenge using the hashtag #SchoolMoaiChallenge. Check out their posts on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to vote for your favorites, and look for an announcement of the competition winners toward the end of November.
What's a Walking Moai Team?
The term "moai" (pronounced mow-eye) comes from Okinawa, Japan. It means "meeting for a common purpose." Walking Moai Teams are groups of 5 to 8 people that meet at least once a week for 10 weeks to walk throughout the community.
With a Walking Moai Team, staying healthy is easier and more fun. Teams spend time together to build or strengthen friendships while tracking their steps as they explore their neighborhoods. Many of your neighbors have already joined a team, don’t miss out on the excitement!
Besides encouraging school staff to get up and get moving, moais are a great opportunity to deepen social connections, and put more fun in the day.
Thank you for inviting us to join in this activity! We had a blast! – Amy Masaoka, Pahoa El
Lots of teachers continue to walk regularly now so I'm stoked! – Jess Bergner, Waiakea High
If you'd like to form your own Walking Moai Team, please email Jade.Iokepa@sharecare.com. Stay tuned for a new School Moai Launch Competition launching in January 2019.
