EM BOKASHI GARDENING DEMONSTRATION IN WAHIAWA
On Saturday, October 13, 2018, community members gathered in Wahiawa Botanical Gardens to attend a gardening demonstration to learn more about the EM® Bokashi method of food-to-waste composting from Hiromichi Nago, President of EM Hawaii, LLC, sharing over 23 years of experience.
Attendees learned that EM® is the abbreviation for Effective Microorganisms® formulated over 30 years ago by Dr. Teruo Higa at the University of the Ryukyu in Okinawa, Japan. EM® is made up of phototrophic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, and yeast. When applied directly or indirectly can enhance plant growth and soil quality. This method helps to turn solid waste into super soil in 2-4 weeks and grow healthy fruits and vegetables.
At this downshift event with Blue Zones Project - Wahiawa, attendees also participated in a make-and-take activity measuring, combining, pouring, and then mixing with milled rice bran. Renee Kamisugi, a Wahiawa community member, commented, “…it is very therapeutic…I can imagine doing this with my kids or hubby after work. Prepping for the garden for the weekend…”
After two weeks of the fermentation process to complete, the EM® Bokashi can use be used to help contain smells from pets, grow our gardens, and of course make super compost! Nago remarked that this Blue Zones Project event was “very well-attended event at the Wahiawa Botanical Garden. Many asked [questions] and felt inspired to recycle food waste and start gardening at home.”
