How do you implement Blue Zones Project into your lifestyle?
I like to move naturally. Whenever I go to grocery stores, I like to park far, get fresh air, take in the scenery, and enjoy getting exercise.
What do you like most about Blue Zones Project?
I like the Power 9. It’s doable for everyone and simple. Everyone can live by it and it’s achievable.
Why is volunteering meaningful to you?
It’s important to teach my daughter to learn what it is to clean up, good habits, and help the community. I also think that it is important to teach these things to the next generation.
Why do you like volunteering?
It gives me a sense of purpose in my community. It means a lot to me to clean up wherever we can, give back, and live a better lifestyle.
Nicolas K. Los Baños, East Hawaiʻi
Nicolas K. Los Baños has been employed at the Hawaiʻi County Office of Aging, Aging and Disability Resource Center for the last 10 years as the Aging and Disability Services Manager. He continues to be a long time supporter of Blue Zones Project in East Hawaiʻi on the Big Island and also practices having a plant-based diet.
"As a participant in community activities and also as a member of the Blue Zones Project steering and engagement committee, I have seen many examples of how the project has empowered individuals and organizations to make healthier choices. The Blue Zones Project has been infusing jolts of healthy activity and information into the community, serving as a powerful catalyst for lifestyle change. I notice more Blue Zones checkout lanes at supermarkets, more walking groups (moais) around town, and a plethora of events throughout the year."
