Meet Blue Zones Project Champion, CAROLYN UCHIYAMA
Meet Blue Zones Project® Champion Carolyn Uchiyama. During Blue Zones Project - Wahiawa's Kickoff last July, Carolyn not only attended all three days of community events, but also helped to coordinate the Blue Zones inspired dinner and made resources known to the community of Wahiawa to become a healthier and happier community. She has actively spearheaded the Blue Zones Project efforts at Wahiawa Hongwanji Mission.

Carolyn's Power 9: Purpose & Belong
"I don't want anything to be contrived. I would like things to be done with a purpose, so it will be very authentic for other people who are out there, then it will become meaningful for them too. I said "belong" because the more I learn about Buddhism, I find that it helps to guide my life more and more compared to before."
What Blue Zones Project means to Carolyn
"I heard of Blue Zones from other people because they were interested in it. And then when I found out that Wahiawa became a BZP community, I started going to meetings. It was very interesting because I was really shocked with the amount of community support it had. When you go to the 'Built Environment' meeting and see 60 people sitting there, they're serious. I think it gives you more credibility to become part of it too and not sit on the way side. Plus, it has been a two-way street because Jeff [Alameida, Community Program Manager] has been so helpful to us. It makes a difference. I can tell he's really an advocate to make Wahiawa 'THE' place and not just a job for now and then move on."
Wahiawa Hongwanji Mission (WHM) temple president Rod Moriyama shared, "Carolyn Uchiyama has been a resident of Wahiawa all her life. A retired educator and entrepreneur, she became a member of WHM when her sons joined WHM's Boy Scouts program. She is currently a Vice President of the Board and represents WHM in many community activities like the Blue Zones Project. She also represents WHM at the State and District levels as President of the Oahu District Council of Temples. She actively participates in district-wide events and is currently leading the effort for WHM's 110th Anniversary Celebration in October [2018]."
