Congratulations St. Augustine's!
St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Kapaau celebrated becoming Blue Zones Project Approved™ on Wednesday, June 21. The church is the second faith-based organization in North Hawaii to earn Blue Zones Project Approved status.
Blue Zones Project Engagement Team members Kathy Matsuda and Lani Bowman worked with church members to incorporate many of the Blue Zones Power Nine principles such as Family First, Plant Slant, and Move Naturally. They completed the Blue Zones Project faith-based organization pledge while adopting and supporting best practices including:
- Incorporating stretches into their group meetings and activities.
- Organizing book club discussions on The Blue Zones Thrive, by Dan Buettner, founder of Blue Zones Project.
- Hosting family fun activities like BINGO Night, a walking moai, and a plant-based potluck for the entire congregation.
“With Lani Bowman and Kathy Matsuda on the Blue Zones Engagement Team, it was easy to get St. Augustine's involved with the project,” said Sue Dela Cruz, Community Engagement Lead for Blue Zones Project – North Hawaii.
“We're very pleased St. Augustine's has been certified as a Blue Zones House of Faith,” said Bowman. “We’re thankful for this opportunity to spread the word about longevity, healthy living, right connections, and joy.”
"Live healthy, be happy, and be positive. Your life will be brighter," said Matsuda. “By working on the project, our church members are more conscious of their well-being."
