EVENTS & OPPORTUNITIES

Hawaiʻi Public Health Initiative (HIPHI) Launches the Safe Routes for Keiki Program

HIPHI is looking for three school communities throughout Hawaiʻi to engage in community-based planning to create safer spaces for students to walk, bike, and roll to school.
The movement for community-designed walking, rolling, and biking programs and projects are endless. The recently completed Keaukaha quick build (reported in the July edition of BZP’s school newsletter; watch the project video here) is one example of what is possible, and one that could inspire other school communities.
A quick build project is a project that takes less than a year to plan, implement, and uses flexible installation materials such as paint and moveable barriers to inspire long-term change in our neighborhoods and streets. These community-designed, easy-to-install road safety solutions are relatively “quick” and easy to “build” so that everyone who uses the spaces can be involved in the process.

If your school is working toward safer active commutes for your staff and students, consider helping HIPHI launch the 2023 Safe Routes for Keiki planning teams. The school communities must be SNAP eligible, have an active community-based organization (parent group such as PTA, community organization, or community based affiliation such as YWCA–can be formal or informal) in support of the project, and a school community ready to begin a Safe Routes for Keiki hui in Spring of 2023. If you would like to learn more about how to connect with Safe Routes for Keiki, please contact HIPHI’s SAIM Program Manager, Jess Thompson at Jessicathompson@hiphi.org

2022-23 Plastic Free Hawai’i School Mural Contest for K-12

Student ArtKōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation's 2022-23 Plastic Free Hawai’i School Mural Contest is now open for entries! The theme is “From Waste to Resource." We encourage K-12 students to utilize marine debris, plastic material, and any other single-use items from cleanups or waste recovery drives, to create art! Give these items a second life by showcasing how you reduce waste and inspire optimistic solutions toward solving plastic pollution. All murals will have a chance to be displayed at the Plastic Free Hawaiʻi Art Show from April 13-15th. The grand prize mural winner will receive a water refill station for their school and a virtual presentation by Upcycle Hawai‘i. For more information on how to apply and for design inspiration, review the flyer. Deadline to enter is February 23, 2023.

Keiki Fun Run at Waiākea High School

Keiki Fun Run

Congratulations to Waiākea High School (WHS) on another successful Keiki Fun Run! On December 10th, a record 700 keiki from 13 schools participated in this event that’s been hosted at WHS since 2006. Chairpersons, Angelina Schwiter and Jazlyn Inouye, coordinated this amazing day as their senior project and did a phenomenal job! WHS students from a variety of clubs and classes helped make the event a success. In addition to the Keiki Run, keiki could take part in lots of activities, such as riding the smoothie bike, soccer games, healthy food toss, and hands on CPR.

The Importance of Purpose

Purpose

In our last issue we highlighted Leilehua High School, whose students attended Blue Zones Project’s Purpose Workshop as part of their career and college focus. The transitions class went on to tie their purpose and gifts to decisions they are making about college and career and presented their self-discoveries in a quarter final PowerPoint presentation.

Staff Wellness Day

Staff Wellness Day

Keonepoko Elementary School staff enjoyed a wellness day that included a team building activity, chess, gym time at Forever Fitness Puna, an ugly sweater party and acupuncture. What a wonderful way to finish up the term and celebrate the holiday!
