Healthy Teens Hawaii Cooking Series

Picture15-2Eat Wisely is one of the Power 9® longevity principles for creating healthy habits, and cooking demonstrations are a great way to learn how to prepare healthy recipes at home. Last month, Blue Zones Project Hawai‘i partnered with students to broaden their skills, insights, and tastebuds with leading well-being activities and events. These opportunities allow our youth to make a deeper connection to their health and the Power 9 principles, share their well-being passion, develop soft skills, and career readiness skills to be well-being leaders in their community.

Blue Zones Project Hawai‘i teamed up with Kai Teranishi-Guay, a high school student at Punahou School, on her Girl Scout Gold Award project – Healthy Teens Hawaii, which focused on educating and inspiring teenagers in Hawai‘i to fall in love with healthy meals and cooking for the sake of their long-term health. Through the Healthy Teens Hawaii project, Kai created a website with blog posts and healthy recipes and co-hosted a series of three virtual healthy cooking classes. The series of virtual cooking demonstrations focused on healthy “snack foods,” like homemade hummus, homemade almond butter and energy bites, and healthy on-the-go bentos—nutritious options instead of the highly processed snacks teens commonly reach for. Kai carefully selected the recipes to ensure that each dish was fail-safe and good for teens who might not cook.

According to Kai (pictured above on left with assistant Aaliyah Okoji), “Blue Zones Project (BZP) was the perfect organization for me to work with because our values completely aligned. One way that BZP works toward improving people’s health is by encouraging eating healthily, which is what I aimed to do with my project. I really enjoyed teaching others how to make my recipes! Initially, I was a bit nervous to talk in front of a large audience, but with practice, it became easier, and I was able to develop better presentational skills.”

Lifestyles are often centered around food and cooking demonstrations are a fun way to educate and share healthy nudges for all ages. Have fun in your kitchen with your keiki by creating a new healthy dish from our Healthy Teens Hawaii series with these recipes. Creating an environment to nurture, grow, and showcase our Hawai’ 'i youth to lead well-being activities allows us to continue to build communities where the healthy choice is the easy choice.
