Power 9 in Hawaii
The Blue Zones Power 9® are the nine healthy lifestyle habits shared by people who've lived the longest. By adapting these common principles into your day-to-day life, you too can create a healthier and happier life. We asked our colleagues at Blue Zones Project - Hawaii how they implement Power 9 in their lives.
Right Tribe

"Finding your right tribe means creating a circle of people who love, support you and make you a better version of yourself! This group of people includes some of the friends I’ve met since moving to Hawaii as well as people I’ve grown up with who were visiting from Pittsburgh and Nashville enjoying the sun rise on Haleakala. Your right tribe will continue to change throughout your life and if you surround yourself with good people, the tribe will only grow bigger and can span miles." - Kelsie Cajka, Senior Consultant
Family First

"Putting our #FamilyFirst with a morning hike at Haleakalā" - Kaimana Brummel, Community Engagement Lead - Central Maui
Plant Slant

"Eating a plant slanted diet allows me to eat nutrient dense food that I can also grow. I love that it saves me money, connects me to my environment, and keeps me healthy all at once." - Jenna Murphy, Community Engagement Lead, Koolaupoko
Purpose

"My purpose is sharing my passion by developing and coaching our youth to thrive through the game of soccer. Through coaching, I am able to teach our keiki about teamwork, loyalty, mental toughness, resilience and leadership. I thrive on the ability to impact our youth by paving their soccer journey toward their goals and dreams." - Laks Abraham, Community Program Manager - Central Maui
Wine @ Five

"I love Wine @ 5 because it can turn a whole room of strangers into friends. Wine @ 5 represents that social connectedness and sense of community we all need in our daily lives. I’ve been teaching yoga to this group of students for over 2 years, and the last Tuesday of every month we stay after class to share wine, pupus, and talk story. We call it “Treat Week,” and we have a pretty darn good time" - Molliane Gotter, Organization Lead - Manoa-Makiki-McCully-Moiliili
Downshift

"The Sato’s Family Downshift Sundays include the Ocean, the Sun, and Family. This is when we (as a family) detach ourselves from our busy schedules, the hustle and bustle, and technology and just enjoy each other and what our island nature has to offer." - Joslyn Sato, Organization Lead - Wahiawa
80% Rule

"Love salads for lunch- avocado, walnuts, lettuce and bell peppers, yum! I practice mindful eating and stop when I feel 80% full! I’m energized and fueled for my day!" - Lee-Ann Heely, Organization Lead - West Hawaii
Belong

"Belonging to and participating in my faith based community provides needed support to my family and I. From getting us out and enjoying our beautiful island to providing the social support to help us through a bad day, my faith based community helps my family and I live longer, healthier and happier lives." - Craig Petty, Vice President
Move Naturally

"Moving Naturally to me has to be fun - what better way than biking or walking through beautiful scenery with a loved one? This is my wife, Jenny, and I biking through Sukhothai’s ancient temple ruins over the holidays." - Cyrus Howe, State Worksite Lead
