SUCCESSFUL START TO 2016

Leahi Health in Kailua Becomes Blue Zones Project Approved

What a great way to start the New Year off on the right foot! Leahi Health in Kailua is now a Blue Zones Project Approved™ restaurant. Owner, Jason Coleman, opened the Windward location last year - his third one on Oahu.

The restaurant is known for its "Plant Slant" menu, and achieved Blue Zones Project Approved status by completing the Blue Zones Project Restaurant Pledge and adopting or supporting a selection of best practices from a list of 35 options, including:

  • Sourcing foods and produce from local farms such as Otsuji Farms, Ko Farms Kolea Farms and Mahalo Farms.
  • Creating a keiki menu called ‘Leahi Kids’, which offers children the option of warm naan topped with a choice of either almond butter, honey or maple drizzle and goji berries or hummus with avocado. Both options are served with a choice of apples, oranges or bananas.
  • Offering alternatives to sugar-sweetened beverages such as homemade kombucha and cold brew coffee.
  • Offering a nutritious dessert option called the Ala Moana Bowl made with organic tambor acai

Leahi Health celebrated becoming a Blue Zones Project Approved restaurant with the entire community on Saturday, February 13 at their Kailua location.  Attendees enjoyed surfer bowl samples to mark the occasion.

Be sure to visit Leahi Health and try one of their tasty menu items! Snap a pic, and share it with us on our Facebook or Instagram page. We'd love to see which food or drink is your favorite. Here's ours - the Mauna Lowen...yum!

Worksites

Many of us spend the majority of our day at work – so having healthy choices at our workplace is key. Blue Zones Project offers solutions for worksites to inspire employees to be happier and more productive at work and at home.

Several worksites are now involved with the Blue Zones Project initative, including Castle Medical Center. The hospital has collaborated with Blue Zones Project and the Department of Health's Choose Healthy Now program to transform its cafeteria, The Bistro, into a Blue Zones Project-inspired dining area. There, you'll find healthy snacks instead of candy, minimal soda and sugar-sweetened beverages, and plenty of "Plant Slant", Blue Zones Project-inspired items to choose from, many of which are made with produce harvested right from Castle Medical Center's rooftop garden.

Castle Medical Center is now moving towards the next step, which is to become a Blue Zones Project Approved™ worksite.
