Resilience and Recovery in Southwest Florida
Local resources to help us build back better and stronger

Recovery

by Blue Zones Project Southwest Florida

It is no secret that natural disasters can cause both mental and physical reactions that occur before, during and after the event. Coming off the heels of a worldwide pandemic, all of us in Southwest Florida and throughout the state are now coping with the devastating impact of hurricane Ian with many who have even tragically suffered the loss of loved ones, their homes, job or business.

A study published by Cambridge University which looked at 500 communities across the USA found that those who had experienced recurring disasters had increased incidences of asthma, high blood pressure, and self-reported poor mental health and poor physical health. Additionally, the incidence of these outcomes increased with each additional year. The need for proper resources to recover and build greater resilience to beat adversity is more important now than ever to help mitigate any lasting effects.

Fortunately, Southwest Florida being a Blue Zones Certified community has shown to be more resilient in the face of disasters, and there are a number of available resources to help bounce back from tragedy on both an individual and community level. It is important to remember that resilience and recovery are the norm, not prolonged distress. Here are some important local resources from partner organizations that we collected to help recover and regain a sense of control following Hurricane Ian.
