Healthy Habits: Avoiding Emotional Eating

Dr. Debbie Rosen, Truvidity Wellness Solutions

For a long time in history, being overweight or obese was considered a sign of wealth, health, and beauty.  Today, we know that being significantly overweight is a leading cause of disease, mortality, and suffering. This is affecting more than 75% of Americans and causing nearly 3 million people to die every year.  Although some people are overweight because of their genetics, underlying illness or other uncontrollable factors, the majority of obesity is caused by lifestyle behaviors within our control.

Research shows that our eating habits are major predictors of body mass index, a common measure of obesity and related to higher diabetes, heart disease, and other serious health issues.   More specifically, eating when stressed or bored and eating beyond the point of satisfying our hunger has a significant impact on overall bodyweight.  Here's a few tips to avoid these harmful eating habits:

1) Recognize the triggers that set off emotional eating like a bad day at work or feeling lonely.
2) Identify alternatives to satisfying those triggers like going for a walk, meeting up with friends, or meditating.
3) Be sure to have low calorie, healthy options available like bite-sized carrots and celery sticks.
