“You can always tell a German, but you can’t tell him much.” I grew up with that quote staring at me from a magnet stuck to the refrigerator door in my childhood home. I remember asking my dad what that phrase meant. With a wink and a smile he answered along the lines of, “We Germans like to keep things the way they are.”
While that is certainly a lighthearted generalization, there is perhaps some truth to it, not just for people born of German descent, but perhaps of many others. Routine can be comfortable and reliable. However, fear of the unknown can cause unrest. When people feel “stuck” in the mundane, it is often because they are. But do they prefer their lives that way over the risk of changing them?
