The Hawaiʻi Employer-Union Health Benefits Trust Fund (EUTF) became a Blue Zones Project ApprovedTM worksite in 2016, and has one of the state’s longest-running Blue Zones Project-inspired well-being programs. Read on to learn more about their success!

Hawaiʻi’s Employer-Union Health Benefits Trust Fund:

Fun and Inclusive Challenges for All

Like many worksites, the pandemic forced the EUTF to adapt their well-being strategy in order to continue engaging work-from-home colleagues and those reporting to the office. Led by well-being champion, Linda Green, the EUTF developed their Health and Wellness website and an online wellness fair as information and activity hubs for the thousands of individuals the EUTF serves across state and county departments and agencies. Linda stated, "The EUTF employers especially the Human Resource Officers and wellness champions throughout the state are the key drivers to worksite wellness success. They encourage employees to take time for their well-being by promoting the EUTF monthly well-being activities." Recently, they implemented environmental changes by creating a downshift lounge for colleagues to relax comfortably on their breaks (photo below).

In partnership with BZP Hawaii’s sponsor, HMSA, EUTF hosted a Healthy Holiday Challenge that benefited participants far and wide. Check out the personal stories of Jimmy Lagunero, Emergency Management Coordinator at UH Manoa’s Department of Public Safety; and Pam Noguchi, City and County of Honolulu civil engineer that was featured in EUTF’s recent newsletter.

Learn more about the EUTF’s monthly challenges here. Challenges are a wonderful way to engage colleagues. Walking or steps challenges are popular because they are relatively simple to track, especially when most people these days have a tracker either in their phone or watch. Check out this conversion chart to count activities other than running/walking to maximize inclusivity.
