2023 ‘Aha Lōkahi Annual Conference
The Hawai‘i Afterschool Alliance presents the 2023 ‘Aha Lōkahi: Hawai‘i CommUNITY Conference, an in-person conference on October 23-25, 2023, at the Koʻolau Ballroom in Kāneʻohe.

Keynote Speaker: Aunty Puanani Burgess, a process designer and facilitator for Building the Beloved Community, a community-building and conflict transformation process based on bringing people face- to-face for ceremony, storytelling, and healing circles of trust and respect.

This year's theme is "Ka Lamakū Aloha: REignite the Light Within." Lamakū is a large torch made of kukui, and it refers to that torch that we carry within us that lights the way. The conference will focus on ways to reignite our light within to learn the best practices and strategies to support children and youth well-being through interactive workshops, site visits, and hands-on activities.

What's Happening in Schools to Support Wellness?

East Hawai’i School Wellness Symposium

School Wellness Leads from the Hilo-Waiakea and the Ka’u-Kea’au-Pahoa Complex Areas gathered on September 14th at the Arc of Hilo to celebrate, learn about, and plan for wellness in the 2023-24 school year. This was the first complex area wellness event since school closures, and participants enjoyed a day of fun activities, new connections, and time to work with their school teams.

BZP & DOE Partner Up for Student Projects

Leilehua-Mililani-Waialua Complex student council advisors and other staff gathered for a project management workshop provided by Blue Zones Project Hawai’i’s Joslyn Sato. The workshop provided tools and strategies on how project management can be applied to school projects, as student council and other student leadership groups plan activities, events, and other initiatives to drive student engagement at the school.

Bringing Blue Zones Project best practices and strategies around project management allows student leaders to identify, plan, implement, and manage student-led well-being projects. In addition, when projects are well-managed, it can reduce stress that often results from juggling multiple school projects with competing timelines.

Pilot Program Launched at Waipahu HighPicture13-Oct-03-2023-01-55-54-0280-AM

Seeds4Tomorrow has launched a Soil Science program for high school students, called Na Lepo Momona ʻO Hawaii Nei (Fertile soils of Hawaii). Tenth graders at Waipahu High will pilot the program by engaging in a combination of lessons on campus and in field. Students created  Winogradsky columns using soil from their campus, soil from the Seeds4Tomorrow fields and a yard in Kailua. These will eventually show the microbial activity in the soil in different parts of the island. Picture12-Oct-03-2023-01-56-03-6585-AM
