EVENTS & OPPORTUNITIES

• Kanu Hawai’i invites you to join cultural practitioners on Earth Day 2023 on all the major islands to welcome the sun and a new day of positive change across Hawai’i and around the world.
• UH Hilo and Hawai’i Community College are hosting a speaker’s series, māla (gardens) day, and huaka‘i (field trips) engaging with the community in places where indigenous food sovereignty is underway.
• Register for other events around the state on Eventbrite.
THERE'S STILL TIME TO REGISTER!
K-6 students statewide can take part in the Keiki Rainbow Wellness Challenge any week between April 1st and May 7th and challenge themselves with fun activities. All participants who submit a scorecard will receive a finisher’s drawstring bag.
K-6 keiki on O’ahu can take part in the Keiki Rainbow Run on April 22nd at Kaka’ako Waterfront Park. Registered runners will get a t-shirt, and 100% of registration fees will be donated to their school.
School registration is now open, and schools can select to take part in one or both activities.

BZP HI: Healthier Hawaii Youth Series Cooking Demo

Join us for a Virtual Cooking Demonstration with Kapolei High Culinary Students
BZP’s Joslyn Sato has been working with Kapolei High School, Academy Director Courtney Suma, and Academy Teacher Jill Tanaka, to support their culinary students’ semester-long project. Students learned well-being through Blue Zones Project pillars and the Power 9 before taking a deep dive into Eating Wisely. Students identified projects to connect to the community through BZP platforms and spent the semester visiting and interviewing local chefs, restaurants, and grocery stores, Their final project will be putting together a recipe that will be demonstrated in this co-hosted virtual workshop with BZP.

What's Happening in Schools to Support Wellness?
Shout Out to Teacher, Angie Miyashiro, from Ka’u High and Elementary!
Hawai’i had a big contingent at the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) America National Convention & Expo in Seattle. Angie Miyashiro (in blue), a teacher at Ka’u High and Elementary, presented Tai Chi 2.0: Creating Inclusion, Equity and Sports Adaptation. Miyashiro was one of over 400 sessions, featuring world-renowned speakers, honorees, athletes and researchers.
OLA'A Community Day
Kea’au Middle School hosted its first Ola’a Community Day, a free community event of family-fun, food, and entertainment. The Hawai’i County Band, KWXX’s Ku’ehu, Dr. Kimo Alameda and Councilmember Matt Kanealii Kleinfelder were some of the special attendees.
Hawai'i Healthy Me Activity Book
Big Island 4th grade teachers are receiving the updated Hawai’i Healthy Me workbook to promote health literacy in our communities. The workbook has stories, mini-lessons and activities geared to fourth graders. Books will be delivered through April, and there is an accompanying website with additional activities and keiki-friendly recipes.
