Congratulations Royal Kona Resort!
Royal Kona Resort celebrates their recognition as they become the first hotel on Hawai‘i Island to become a Blue Zones Project Approved™ worksite.
Royal Kona Resort is an oceanfront landmark in the heart of Kailua-Kona and is centrally situated near renowned Ali‘i Drive and a variety of restaurants, shops, historical sites and activities. This year, Royal Kona Resort will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The hotel is a family of employees, many of whom have worked at the property for over 30 years. One struggle shared by many of the staff is health: employees dealing with their own serious conditions, or caring for family with serious conditions while still trying to work to meet their family’s financial obligations.
While the hotel has provided health and leave benefits to support its employees, Royal Kona Resort wanted to take a more proactive approach to promote healthy behaviors and possibly prevent and/or improve the health conditions of its employees. With that, Royal Kona Resort launched the Royal Fit wellness program for employees. Hotel employees are responding well to the program, making healthy choices each day: whether it is to drink water instead of a soda or to take the stairs rather than the elevator, they are much more conscious of their well-being.
The hotel achieved Blue Zones Project Approved status by successfully adopting best practices that promote well-being, including:
- Training leaders on having walking meetings to increase efficiency while getting time to move naturally;
- Hosting and promoting a Purpose Workshop for their staff and inviting the community to participate;
- And creating an employee garden which is located on property and will be used to support monthly plant-based potlucks.
For Royal Kona Resort, the Blue Zones Project approval is just the beginning. “The Blue Zones Worksite pledge is a very effective tool through which we have laid a great foundation to continue the good work,” remarked Criste Ching, the resort’s Human Resource Generalist. “We encourage all worksites to take the pledge. The process has been very rewarding and every step of the way we have had the support of the Blue Zones Project team.”
