Centenarians in the Blue Zones eat a plant-based diet packed with a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and beans. Put less meat and more plants on your plate.
Malia Smith, Waimanalo resident and co-owner of Ai Love Nalo, shares why she embraces the Plant Slant Power 9 principle in an interview.
Q: Why do you believe a Plant Slant diet is important?
A: It's important because it can actually save money and lives! According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, if Americans ate just ONE more serving of fruits and vegetables per day, more than 30,000 lives, and $5 billion in medical costs could be saved each year. Additionally, if Americans followed our USDA recommendations for daily consumption of fruits and vegetables, those numbers would increase to 127,000 lives and $17 billion saved! Those numbers are staggering, and provides a clear indication why plant slant is essential.
Q: What does Plant Slant mean to you?
A: To me, plant slant means slanting or making a slight modification toward eating a more plant-based diet, so that you provide your body with the necessary nutrients it needs to live a healthier and happier life!
Q: How do you incorporate the Plant Slant Power 9 principle into your life?
A: It requires a shift in lifestyle, where you ensure that you make your favorite fruits and vegetables readily available to add to your daily meals and snacks. Luckily, I am the owner of Ai Love Nalo, which is a 100% plant-based restaurant that sources local organic produce to help support our farmers; hence, I am fortunate to enjoy these healthier, fresher and tastier foods on a daily basis.

In August, we celebrated 5 more moais in Koolaupoko at the 10 week finish line acknowledging participants' commitment to spending time with people who support healthy habits. These walking and potluck moais were formed a few months ago for the purpose of building new friendships, moving naturally, and sharing healthy, plant slant recipes. Why? Because we've learned from the world's longest-lived people the importance of consciously choosing to associate with supportive, healthy-minded people.
Vibrant moai members share laughter, conversation, and home-made plant-based dishes at what will actually not be the final gathering for many. Though the moai program commitment is only 10 weeks, Walking Moai Team Champion 7, made up mostly of Kaneohe residents, will continue to meet and walk their 2.5-mile-long route in Kaneohe. A fitting team name, Champion 7 won the top award for spending the most time together, which rounds up to 27 hours total of walking and "potlucking" over 10 weeks. They are inspiration and motivation for well-being transformation.
Way to go Koolaupoko!

Director of Operations and Human Resources, Timon Leong and his team, are leading the effort towards becoming a Blue Zones Project ApprovedTM worksite. Together, they have ignited more than 90 employees to take the Blue Zones Personal Pledge making a commitment to personal well-being. Some of the ways Leong and his team are supporting transformation are by hosting locally inspired cooking demonstrations featuring Chefs Kealoha Domingo and Mark Noguchi, leading twice-weekly walking groups, and composing nutritious and delicious daily specials at Aunty Pat’s Café, which is open to the public.
Promoting a culture of health and happiness is made a priority from employees' first days on the job. An exciting addition to New Hire Orientation includes a presentation of Blue Zones Project.
