Earlier this month, Windward Community College was recognized as the first worksite in the University of Hawaii college system to become Blue Zones Project Approved™.  Along with the support of Chancellor Doug Dykstra, the effort to complete the worksite pledge was led by Dr. Jamie Boyd with her team of select faculty and staff.

With the goal of helping to improve the health and wellness of their faculty, staff and students, while going through the Blue Zones Project® pledge process, the college held healthy cooking demonstrations, started three Walking Moai groups that walked weekly on-campus over 10 weeks and hosted a Community Garden Day where more than 50 community members helped build a pohaku stone wall, pulled weeds in their medicinal garden and improved the Nursing Pathway garden.

After giving back, volunteers learned about Blue Zones Project while enjoying a healthy plant-based lunch made by Uala Leaf Cafe, a Blue Zones Project Approved restaurant located in Hale Akoakoa on-campus.

To help further Blanche Pope Elementary School's vision for native and canoe plant cultural garden, or mala, nearly 100 volunteers from keiki to kupuna spent their Saturday giving back.  Volunteers helped to implement a gravel pathway to define learning zones, planted pili grass and constructed an effective irrigation system for the garden. The project was part of a worldwide event called Green Apple Day of Service that takes place in schools all over the U.S. on September 24. The event activates hundreds of thousands of volunteers (individuals, companies and organizations) to build greener environments in their schools and communities. With the sponsorship of HHF Planners, a Honolulu-based planning and landscape architecture firm, Blue Zones Project, Pā Ola Hawai‘i, a Waimanalo-based clinic that is home to practitioners and students of lomilomi massage and Waimānalo Co-op offered volunteered families free one-year membership to get fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers.  The coming together of so many different community organizations made it a beautiful and productive day, a testament of the love and aloha people have for their community, Waimānalo.
