KNITTING MOAI
Written by: Geraldine Ibarra, Hawaiian Telcom
Hawaiian Telcom is a Blue Zones Project participating organization.
In early March, Joy Ibarra and members of the Product Delivery team decided to hold a small workshop to learn the craft of knitting. Joy, an avid knitter of 18 years, did not hesitate at sharing her craft. "There are so many benefits that come with knitting," she said, "It's so relaxing and I feel very accomplished when I finish a project." Starting with 8 students, they learned the basics of starting a project and creating a knit stitch. The class has since grown to 12, with students now completing small projects like potholders, scarves and beanies.

The ultimate goal for these classes is to have students embrace the meditative and creative aspects of knitting while working towards a charity project. The group is working towards their first charity project of baby beanies for the nursery at Kapiolani Medical Center.
