BLUE ZONES: Music makes connections

Live music brings people together, and research has shown that music impacts how people think, feel and behave both as individuals and as a group.

In a study published by Cognitive Science Journal random participants were paired up and were asked to complete tasks that required interpersonal coordination. Prior to completing the task, however, groups were randomly assigned to listen to either rhythmic music, non-rhythmic music or white noise. Groups that had listened to the rhythmic music together completed the tasks more easily than groups that had listened to the non-rhythmic music or white noise. These findings suggest that music, and specifically the rhythm of music, has the ability to enhance team cohesiveness and increase positive social attitudes, allowing for increased social connection.
