Grow Oahu Training

Registration is now open for a series of four hands-on workshops for Pre K-12 educators on Oahu seeking to build their garden growing and garden-based teaching skills! Register here.
Hands-on learning will cover:

  • Soil health & composting
  • Crop planning & propagation
  • Irrigation & cover crops
  • Pest & weed management
  • Garden & food safety
  • Curricular integration

Participants will have the option of earning Hawai‘i Department of Education (HIDOE) PDE3 credits (see course number MULT187445; SY22-23 section number to be announced).

SY22-23 Course Dates and Locations (Saturdays, 9 AM - 2 PM):

  • September 17, 2022, GoFarm Waialua [registration due September 3]
  • October 29, 2022, KEY Project, Kahalu‘u
  • January 21, 2023, Waikīkī Elementary
  • February 11, 2023, GoFarm Waimānalo

Cost: FREE + lunch will be provided each day!



Core Peacebuilding Workshop Series 2022-23

The Core Peacebuilding Workshop Series from RCSF lead partner Ceeds of Peace kicks off soon and in-person again. In this FREE workshop series, all educators, parents, caregivers, nonprofit professionals, and general community members are invited to develop the skills and strategies to build peace within, with others, and in service to the community.

Location: Pacific Buddhist Academy (1754 Lusitana Street, Honolulu, HI 96813)
Date/Time: 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM on 10/22/22, 12/3/22, 1/21/23

FOR DOE EDUCATORS SEEKING PDE3 CREDIT: DOE Educators will also be required to attend an additional session on 11/19/22 from 9:00 AM to noon at Pacific Buddhist Academy to achieve the required course hours to earn PDE3 credit.


ʻOAKA Presents: YOUTH Summits

Beginning in Puna, and circling Moku o Keawe, ʻOAKA is hosting a series of YOUTH Summits for young adults ages 15-22. The YOUTH (Youth Opportunity to Unite and Transform with Hubs) Summit series is aimed at building capacity and agency of youth (ages 15-22) to activate community and engage as positive change makers. Summits will take place around Hawai‘i Island and kicked-off on Saturday, Aug. 27th in partnership with Team Pa‘a in Puna. Register here!

What's happening in our schools to support wellness?

Picture11-2Congratulations to the Hawai’i Afterschool Alliance on the amazing ʻAha Lōkahi CommUNITY Conference whose theme this year was "Ua Ola Loko i ke Aloha: Thriving Youth Starts with Us." Topics included Allyship and Best Practices for Supporting LGBTQ Youth, Behavioral Interventions for Students with Special Needs, Social Emotional Learning and Cultivating Educator Well-being, SPARKing Aloha: Doable Strategies to Support Your Well-being and Flourishing, Understanding and Working with Micronesian Communities in Hawaiʻi, Youth Mental Health in Hawai`i, Mindfulness Practices for Youth Self-Care and more!

Blue Zones Project provided nutrition information and materials and hosted a super fun trivia contest.

 

Picture13-1School staff in the Ka’u-Kea’au-Pahoa Complex Area (KKPCA) were invited to take advantage of a free wellness check as part of a series that includes luncheons, learning opportunities and community walks, and is part of the KKPCA’s goals to:

  • Create opportunities for KKPCA colleagues to connect and have fun together.
  • Encourage personal health education and healthy lifestyle habits.
  • Engage w/partners to do service to improve our community.

Campbell-Kapolei’s School Wellness Hui had their first 2022-23 meeting to connect around collaborative opportunities, best practices, and challenges to create synergy among neighbor schools. The Hui is made up of school administrators and staff who serve as wellness leaders for their school ‘ohana. In motion this year are working with Malama Pu’uloa, improving traffic safety around campus, garden projects, wellness days, and other ways these schools are promoting staff and student well-being.
