2022 ‘Aha Lōkahi: Hawai‘i CommUNITY Conference

conferenceSpace is still available at the Hawai‘i Afterschool Alliance’s 2022 ‘Aha Lōkahi: Hawai‘i CommUNITY Conference, an in-person conference on August 26-27, 2022 at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

This year's theme, "Ua Ola Loko i ke Aloha: Thriving Youth Starts With Us" (Love gives life within. Love is imperative to one's mental and physical welfare), recognizes the need for love and care for ourselves in order to love and care for the youth and families we serve. Through interactive workshops, site visits, and hands-on activities, this conference will focus on ways to nurture our well-being as well as strategies and best practices to support our children and youth's well-being. Blue Zones Project will be offering presentations on healthy nutrition for adults and for K-12 educators.

This conference is for afterschool and youth development professionals, educators, administrators, and other community members who are dedicated to supporting Hawaiʻiʻs children and youth. Questions? Contact hawaii4ost@gmail.com

Activities Related to Urban Forestry

In Wahiawā, the Community Forestry Program worked with Blue Zones Project, Wahiawā Fresh/Wahiawā Community Based Development Organization (WCBO), New Hope Central Oʻahu, and Wahiawā General Hospital to distribute trees throughout the Wahiawā community.

This included schools in the area, such as ʻIliahi Elementary, Kaʻala Elementary, Leilehua Area Complex, and Wahiawā Elementary.

Donate and Swap School Supplies

Picture21Join the Kōkua General Store in REDUCING, REUSING and RECYCLING any school supplies you no longer need. They launched a school supply swap on July 23rd, that will continue throughout August!

  • If you have gently used school supplies you'd like to contribute, such as notebooks, backpacks, pencils, pens and folders that are still in good condition, bring them to the Kōkua General Store (66-249 Kamehameha Hwy in Haleʻiwa Town) Thursday-Saturday, 11am-3pm.
  • If you are an educator in need of school supplies for your classroom or students, come by during that time. There will be a bin of free items for anyone who needs supplies for the new school year!

BRIGHT SPOTS
What's happening in our schools to support wellness?

Picture26keonepoko Elementary School staff started the 2022-23 SY by building pilina (association, relationship and connection) and getting to know the community in which they serve. Pāhoa businesses and community members joined in with a Goose Chase Scavenger Hunt!

Picture24Mauka Lani Elementary School invited volunteers to touch up the school with a fresh coat of paint in the playground, pick-up litter, and work in the garden. What a great way to start the school year!

Congratulations to Connections Public Charter School who received a $99,000 grant from the USDA for the implementation of its Agroforestry program. The funds will help guide decision-making concerning the locations of various classrooms, while increasing access to traditional foods grown on the land, which will in turn increase participation in the school’s meal service programs.

Students at all grade levels will learn the value of traditional, self-sufficient, local food and agroforestry systems in the Pacific Islands, as they watch their new campus develop.
